Jonathan Kuminga Could Return to Warriors as Trade Looms
Jonathan Kuminga could be back in Golden State’s rotation after Jimmy Butler’s season-ending torn right ACL, ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported. Slater said the Warriors are “exploring the idea of restarting the engines” with Kuminga and that from Kuminga’s side “he will be ready if called upon.” Kuminga started the first 12 games, averaging 14.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists, but was benched for Moses Moody and has appeared in just six games since. With the Feb. 5 trade deadline looming, his role and future with the Warriors are in doubt. Merlin sees a player at a crossroads. Kuminga’s flashes show why he was a top pick, yet repeated benchings suggest the fit is frayed. Expect short-term opportunities to prove value, but also mounting trade chatter as Golden State weighs roster balance and timing.
